Edward Sheppard was a man of strong character & influence in the community. He was active in the "Sons of Temperance", a zealous Democrat, though not active in the party. He was a trustee in the Presbyterian Church at Cedarville. He had some of the rudiments of education as a child, then followed the life of a boatman, & for 14 years. he followed the water, a portion of the time he was a captain of a vessel sailing to nearby ports. He entered the Army in 1862. served 9 ,months. participated in the battles of Fredericksburg & Cancellorsville.
If his marriage date to Mildred Horner is correct, she is not the mother of these children.
