Trip to Europe

Jacques Rieur deserted the Russian army in 1908. First he went to Germany (approximately 6 months) and then he spent 2 years in France. He arrived in the United States on 5 Nov 1910 [Ship La Savoie from Havre, 0016. Rier, Jacob, Male, 20 years old, Single, nationality Russian, race Hebrew, previous residence Paris, France, 5'8", brown hair, blue eyes, occupation chemist, parent Israel Rier, living in Vilna, fare paid by cousin, destination cousin Hershell Ratner (his mother's maiden name) at 231 Germany (?) St]. After attending New York University, he worked at the Jewish Community Center of Omaha, Nebraska. He became a citizen on 15 June 1914 in Omaha NE [1922 Ellis Island manifest]. He received a graduate engineering degree at the University at Lincoln, Nebraska, and spent some time surveying for the railroads. After a while, he went to Syracuse, New York where he helped organize the Jewish Community Center there.
In 1922, he, his wife, and son, Nichmud, made a trip to Europe. Their return via Ellis Island provided the following information: Ship Berengaria, leaving from Southampton, arriving on 1 Sep 1922. Their destination was 326 Hart Street, Brooklyn, N. Y.
