Notes:
Nell Buck raised Elsie after the death of her parents. She was a very
strict, unhappy person.
Lilian White, her niece, moved to Panama and invited Elsie for a visit
when she was a young adult, in hopes of getting her out of Nell Buck's
household. Nell was angry when Elsie left. Elsie stayed on in Panama
and met Ralph Gesner. Shortly thereafter they married. After the birth
of their first child, Carol, the couple returned to the US to raise her
as an American.
