Gottliebin came to the US with her father, John Knoll, and her sister, Catherina Knoll from Lauffen am Neckar. Lauffen am Neckar is approximately 15 miles due north of Stuttgart and 3 miles SSW of Heilbronn. Today Stuttgart is the capital of Wuerttemberg, Germany. They lived with Gottliebin's oldest brother, John Matthaus Knoll, who had emigrated earlier to America and was a farmer in Norristown and later in Centre Square PA. David Hofsas, a baker, and Jakob D Hofsas, who married Gottliebin's older sister Catherina, were brothers who also came from Lauffen. It has been said that David Hofsas followed Gottliebin to America, so perhaps the brothers followed the sisters to America. When we left Gemund, we drove to Speyer and had time to spend several hours in the Palatinate Historical Museum... It featured an excellent exhibit on the 2000 years of the history of Speyer.... In the 18th and early 19th centure the ancestors of my father's father came to Pennsylvania from the Palatinate. Much of that area had been destroyed by French troops several times including the late 1600s -- good reason for leaving.... ... we drove to Lauffen... It was fascinating to walk around the old town of Lauffen... When we tried to see if the Rathaus [city hall] would have information about just where the Knolls lived, they referred us to the Pfarrant, but [no one answered]... Outside of Lauffen we walked through some of the numerous vineyards to Roman ruins (1st century CE). I knew the Romans lived in much of southern Germany, but it was fascinating to see evidence of them in the Lauffen area.... [Notes from Dorothy Neiman Swanson's visit to Germany, 1990.]![]()
