John's birth and death dates are approximate. John was of English extraction, but of Irish birth. Before he came to America he lived at Clough Keating, Tipperary, Ireland. He was a Baptist. He came to America about 1684 and it is thought he settled in Back Creek, (Back Neck) Fairfield Township. Cumberland County, NJ. Sheppard was originally spelled Shepheard. John was a member of the first Grand Jury of the first court, 7 Sep 1706, in NJ. It is possible that there were more children than listed.
