Notes:

In 1722 Dickinson Sheppard purchased 1400 acres of land on the south side of Autuxit Creek, NJ. In the following year, he made another purchase of 1600 acres, adjoining his 1st land, all in the township of Dawne, Cumberland Co. NJ. This is the land on which Newport now stands, and he was a Freeholder in 1716, 1722, 1728, and 1733 in the south side of Cohansey. He was overseer of roads in 1709-10 and surveyor of the highways in1728. The road leading from the King to Dividing Creek, through the present Newport was laid out in 1760 through his fields. His second purchase of land, made in 1722, was conveyed by Colonel Thomas Byerly, and was in the south side of Autuxit Creek (where Newport stands). He also owned a tract of 1650 acres of Salt Marsh which he bought in 1723 from Thomas Baten & John Budd on the shore of Delaware Bay, below Autuxit Creek, and which he divided among his children. In 1746 he deeded 320 acres to son Dickinson Jr. and 328 acres to Jonadab, where they settled. His son-in-law William Paullen succeeded him in the ownership of a portion and some of his descendants still live there. He was a member of the 7th Legislature, which met 4 Apr 1776 - 28 Mar 1779.
